Can I Use My Insurance?

Using Your Out-of-Network Benefits

While we don't bill insurance directly, many patients are able to receive partial reimbursement for their physical therapy through their out-of-network benefits. Every insurance plan is different, so we recommend checking your specific coverage before your first visit. Here's how:

  1. Call the number on your insurance card. Look for "Member Services" on the back of your insurance card. When you call, tell them you want to check your out-of-network physical therapy benefits.

  2. Ask the right questions: Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient physical therapy? Do I have a deductible for out-of-network care, and how much of it have I met? What percentage of the cost will be reimbursed after my deductible is met? Is there a limit on the number of visits or a maximum dollar amount per year? Do I need a referral or prior authorization for physical therapy?

  3. Write down your reference number. Insurance reps will give you a call reference number and their name. Save this in case there's ever a discrepancy about what you were told.

  4. Receive your superbill after each visit. After your visit, you'll be given (or emailed) an itemized receipt called a superbill. It includes the codes, diagnosis, and charges insurance needs to process your claim.

  5. Submit your superbill to your insurance. You can typically submit this through your insurance company's online member portal, by mail with a claim form (available on their website), or through an app like Reimbursify, which many patients find to be the easiest option.

  6. Wait for your reimbursement. Processing times vary by insurer, often 2-6 weeks. Your reimbursement (if approved) will be sent directly to you, not to our office, typically by check or direct deposit.

Please note: reimbursement amounts and timelines vary widely by plan, and are never guaranteed. We're happy to answer any questions about your superbill or the codes on it, but the details of your coverage and reimbursement are determined by your insurance company.
